Mon 9Memory Care Companion with Alzheimer's Support NetworkWe have a new resident at Canterfield of Fort Myers (18301 Trifecta LaneFort Myers, FL 33967). She is very talkative, but talks primarily in word salad. We are looking for someone who would enjoy spending an hour every week as a companion for her. This service-learning opportunity will give you a background educational lesson in Alzheimer's over Zoom before you begin as a companion. We will provide you with a life profile for your partner in the community, which will include examples on what they would enjoy doing with you. There will be a zoom check-in after the first month, and every other month after that based on continuing education needs. Stay for 1-2 hours every week whenever you are available and is a good time for the resident. You will be provided with times the resident is typically in activities or has visitors. The benefits to this program have been proven worldwide. First and foremost, these activities will help the children improve physically, cognitively and socially. This program will also raise awareness of the Special Olympics program and serve as an introduction to the resources and support available within Special Olympics Florida families, agencies and schools. Volunteers will act as play pals for children with/without disabilities for children between the ages of 2-7. The volunteers will need to be their 30 minutes before the start of the session for debrief, training and overview of the day. Volunteers will also need to stay 30 minutes after the session ends for clean up and reorganization.
