We, the Whitaker Institute for STEM Education at FGCU, are involved with STEM outreach and education in the SWFL community. Each year, we host several GEMS events (Growing in Engineering, Math, and Science) for middle school students. The students attend two hands-on workshops led by STEM faculty during this half-day program. We are in need of FGCU student volunteers to assist the faculty member or external STEM professional in their activity. In each room, there are multiple FGCU student volunteers with a ratio of about 1 FGCU student to 2-3 middle school students. This ensures that the children will be able to progress through the lab activities while also providing them with another positive role model in STEM. PLEASE RSVP TO VOLUNTEER BY November 8th, 2025! Volunteers are expected to: *Attend November 14th, 2025 from 4:00pm - 5:30pm for orientation. *Arrive at 7:45am on November 15th, 2025 to help with set up. The Oasis Youth Shelter of Lutheran Family Services in Fort Myers, FL is a temporary live-in shelter for youth ages 10 to 17 who are experiencing homelessness or family instability. Our inaugural lecture, “Professors, Peers, and Possibilities”, will be led by faculty members Roberto Garcia and Miles Mancini. This engaging session will focus on the importance of building supportive relationships with faculty.
