We, the Whitaker Institute for STEM Education at FGCU, are involved with STEM outreach and education in the SWFL community. Each year, we host several GEMS events (Growing in Engineering, Math, and Science) for middle school students. The students attend two hands-on workshops led by STEM faculty during this half-day program. We are in need of FGCU student volunteers to assist the faculty member or external STEM professional in their activity. In each room, there are multiple FGCU student volunteers with a ratio of about 1 FGCU student to 2-3 middle school students. This ensures that the children will be able to progress through the lab activities while also providing them with another positive role model in STEM. PLEASE RSVP TO VOLUNTEER BY September 19, 2025! Volunteers are expected to: *Attend September 26, 2025 from 4:00pm - 5:30pm for orientation. *Arrive at 7:45am on September 27, 2025 to help with set up. Bowditch Beach is a hidden gem near Fort Myers — quieter than most local beaches and offering views of Sanibel Island! This beach allows you to walk through trails with mangroves, making it the perfect place to enjoy nature while making a positive impact. Event: Bunche Beach Cleanup- Honoring 2 Year Anniversary of Hurricane IanDate: September 28, 2024Time: 6:00 pm - 7:45 pm Location: Bunche Beach Preserve - 18201 John Morris Rd, Fort Myers Beach, FL 33908 What To Bring: Reuseable water bottle and wear comfortable clothes. We suggest a hat and sunglasses. What We Provide: All tools needed, sunblock, water refill jug, a designated team members who take pictures and ensure safety, and finally Pizza during sunset.Safety Guidelines: Drink plenty of water and take breaks as needed. Set a timer to come back at set time. Watch out for sharp objects, glass, and wildlife. Avoid heavy lifting and work with a buddy at all times. Do not touch hazardous materials such as needles or chemicals. Report heavy items to our designated team member.Post Cleanup: Weigh your buckets and join the group photo at 7:15 pm. Why Help: Beach cleanups are a last line of defense to prevent debris from causing harm to our oceans, to wildlife, to our coastal economies, and even beach-goers. After Hurricane Ian these efforts are needed more than ever.
