Defending ASUN Champs open fall season with second-place finish in Georgia
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Florida Gulf Coast University women's golf team wrapped up the first tournament of the season on Tuesday, finishing in second out of 13 teams. The Eagles finished with a team score of 900 (+36) for the event, which was hosted by Georgia Southern University at Forest Heights Country Club.
Junior Lousiane Gauthier (+9) led the way for the Eagles, picking up where she left off after a spring campaign that saw her compete at the NCCA Championship. Freshman Jordan Fischer turned in rounds of 74 and 73 before shooting 78 in Tuesday's finale to tie with Gauthier in 11th place.
Gauthier produced a first-round total of 72 to end the round in a tie for fifth individually, while Benoit followed with a 72 in the second round. As a team, the Eagles' best round came on Monday, when they combined for a score of 294, the second-best team mark of the tournament.
Leonie Wulfers, Islay Benoit and Sydney Deal all tied one another with a mark of +12, putting all five Eagles inside the top 20 in the field of 70. Wulfers' eight combined birdies over the three rounds were a team-high, while Fischer finished on her heels with seven.
FGCU has now finished in the top two in the season's first tournament in back-to-back years after winning the Johnie Imes Invitational last fall. The Eagles are back in action on Monday, when they open the Inverness Invitational in Toledo, Ohio.
