Gauthier leads in Lubbock after round one
Florida Gulf Coast University's Lousiane Gauthier fired a 3-under-par 69 to tie for the individual lead after Sunday's opening round of the NCAA Women's Golf Lubbock Regional at The Rawls Course. The Eagles sit in ninth place as a team with a 309, just four strokes out of a tie for fourth and within reach of advancing to the NCAA Championship.
On a cool, blustery afternoon, Gauthier was one of just five players to post a red number, showcasing poise and precision throughout her round. After a bogey on her opening hole (No. 10), the standout from Uruguay settled in with six consecutive pars before capitalizing on the par-5 17th and 18th with back-to-back birdies. She made the turn at 1-under and continued her strong play with seven more pars and birdies on Nos. 8 and 9 to close with a 34 on the front side.
The back nine played tougher on Sunday, and with FGCU starting on No. 10, the Eagles faced early challenges. Leonie Wulfers etched her name in program history as the first FGCU player to record a birdie in NCAA Division I Regional play, doing so on No. 13. Islay Benoit followed with a birdie on No. 14, while Amelie Alcantara added birdies on Nos. 4 and 8. Posie Farrelly contributed with 10 pars, tied for second-most on the team.
Benoit carded FGCU's second counting score with a 79 (+7), followed by Wulfers at 80 (+8), and Alcantara and Farrelly each with 81s (+9).
Despite the early test, the Eagles remain firmly in contention. Tennessee and Arizona are tied for fourth at 305 (+17), with Texas A&M (306), UC Davis (307), and Purdue (308) narrowly ahead of FGCU's 309 (+21).
Seeded No. 10 entering the regional, FGCU has earned a spot in a Monday pairing alongside UC Davis and Purdue. The Eagles will tee off from the front nine, with Alcantara leading the way at 11:55 a.m. CT, followed by Farrelly (12:06 p.m.), Wulfers (12:17 p.m.), Benoit (12:28 p.m.), and Gauthier (12:39 p.m.).
