Eagles selected for Lubbock Regional
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University's first appearance in the NCAA Women's Golf Championship will take place deep in the heart of Texas, as the Eagles have been selected as the No. 10 seed in the Lubbock Regional hosted by Texas Tech University.
"We're excited to be heading to Lubbock," said FGCU head coach and Atlantic Sun Conference Women's Golf Coach of the Year Shannon Sykora. "It's a good golf course and great competition. We're looking forward to it."
FGCU will tee off its first round May 5 at 8:55 a.m. CDT from the 10th hole. FGCU will be paired with Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for the first round. Groups will tee off every 11 minutes, beginning with the No. 5 person from each school.
The regional will be contested at The Rawls Course. Designed by Tom Doak, the course will play to a par 72 and a maximum yardage of 6,701. The shortest hole is No. 3, a 160-yard par 3 that can play as short as 141 yards if the decision is made to use a forward tee. The longest hole is the 594-yard 17th hole, a par 5.
The end of the back nine will prove to be a pivotal stretch. In addition to the 17th hole, the 18th will also play as a par 5 and will measure 554 yards on the scorecard. The back nine plays longer than the front nine by over 300 yards.
The Eagles earned their trip to the NCAA Regionals by winning the ASUN Championship on the fourth playoff hole over Stetson. Lousiane Gauthier won the individual championship as the only golfer to shoot even par for the three rounds of the event. Gauthier was named ASUN Women's Golfer of the Year on Tuesday and also earned First Team All-ASUN recognition. Posie Farrelly and Amelie Alcantara each received Second Team All-ASUN honors, with Islay Benoit taking ASUN All-Freshman recognition.
FGCU enters as the No. 10 seed and is one of four automatic qualifiers to the tournament playing in Lubbock. Arizona (Big 12), Tarleton State (Western Athletic), and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Southland) are the other automatic qualifiers.
The top seed in the Lubbock Regional is the University of Texas. Wake Forest University is seeded second, with Arizona third. Three schools from the Southeastern Conference will be featured in Lubbock, as Texas is joined by Texas A&M and Tennessee.
The top five teams and the lowest individual not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championships May 16-21 at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif.
