Harper second, Eagles sixth with play suspended in Virginia
Nolan Harper is tied for second at 3-under par with one hole remaining in his first round, as Florida Gulf Coast University sits in sixth place with play suspended at the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Amherst Regional at Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst, Virginia.
The Eagles are one of seven teams with holes left to complete in the opening round. Play was moved up a day due to a forecast of heavy rain over the next few days. After a morning practice round, the regional began at 1:45 p.m., with FGCU's first golfer teeing off on No. 10 at 3:10 p.m.
FGCU entered the regional as the No. 10 seed but trails fifth-place Pepperdine by just two strokes. Two of the Eagles' five golfers completed their rounds before play was suspended due to darkness. Tom Scullion carded a 1-under 69 with seven birdies. Brett Moore made the turn with birdies on Nos. 1 and 2 and finished with a 3-over 73.
Harper has No. 9 left to play, as the Eagles began the round on the back nine. The freshman made the turn in 32 after three straight birdies on Nos. 12-14. He rebounded from a double bogey on No. 1 with birdies on two of his next four holes to sit even par on his second nine.
Sebastian Gamboa and Christian Figueredo each have three holes remaining. Gamboa has three birdies and is currently 3-over.
Tennessee currently leads the regional with a 271 (-9). Oklahoma is in second with 276 (-4) and Vanderbilt is in third with a 278 (-2). Arkansas still has holes left to play but is in fourth, with Pepperdine finished at 280 (E).
Play will resume Monday at 7:30 a.m., with hopes of beginning the second round at 9:30 a.m. Teams must complete at least 36 holes for scores to count; otherwise, the top five seeds will automatically advance to the NCAA Championship.
