Harper named ASUN Freshman of the Year, Danna collects Coach of the Year honors
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Freshman Nolan Harper and head coach Andrew Danna highlighted Florida Gulf Coast University men's golf in the Atlantic Sun Conference postseason awards Tuesday, as announced by the league office. Harper was named the ASUN Freshman of the Year, and coach Danna took home the Coach of the Year honors.
Three Eagles earned ASUN First Team honors, the most in a single season in program history as Brett Moore and Sebastian Gamboa joined Harper on the First Team list voted on by the coaches. Christian Figueredo made the Second Team. All four Eagles are averaging 71.6 or better per round, two of which are on pace to set the single-season school record.
Danna's Coach of the Year Award marks his third such honor with the Green and Blue since taking over the program in 2019. Danna is the only coach in the history of the program to collect the ASUN's Coach of the Year title. Under his leadership, the FGCU men's golf program has emerged as the only team in the FGCU Athletics' history to have earned two at-large berths into NCAA postseason play, 2022 and 2025. Danna directed the Eagles to a 10-seed in the upcoming Amherst Regional. FGCU is on pace to set the scoring average school record, averaging 283.7 heading into the regional on May 12-14.
The Eagles posted six top-three finishes this season, including three runner-up team performances and an individual win at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate courtesy of ASUN Freshman of the Year Award winner Harper. FGCU placed no lower than fifth in six of seven events played this spring. The Eagles posted back-to-back runner-up efforts at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island and at Old Corkscrew. FGCU climbed as high as No. 48 in the rankings this season and is home to two of the four highest-ranked golfers across the ASUN.
Harper is the first Eagle to win the ASUN Freshman of the Year Award since 2013. The freshman notched one win, one top-five and had two top-10 finishes this spring, averaging 71.3 per round. He is ranked No. 218 in the nation, the third highest ranked golfer in the ASUN and the highest ranked freshman in the conference. He placed fourth at The Johnnie-O at Sea Island and sixth at the ASUN Championship. His first career victory came at the Old Corkscrew Intercollegiate, holding steady under windy conditions en route to being named ASUN Men's Golf of the Week.
Moore, another Eagle freshman, is ranked No. 232 in the nation and the fourth-best golfer in the league, averaging 71.4 per round as a unanimous selection to the ASUN Freshman and First Team. Moore broke the program record for the lowest 18-hole round with a 63. He posted two top-three performances during his freshman campaign, placing second at the SeaBest Invitational and third at the premier Seminole Intercollegiate. Moore finished 13th at the ASUN Championship, and the freshman won ASUN Men's Golfer of the Week honor twice for his efforts.
ASUN First Team Selection Gamboa holds a team-low 71.0 average and led all Eagles at the ASUN Championship by tying for second, earning ASUN All-Tournament Team honors. Gamboa, a sophomore, also tallied three top-three efforts, including three top 10s. Gamboa finished sixth at the Gators Invitational, ninth at The Clerico and 10th at the Rod Myers Invitational.
Figueredo, who made the Second Team, racked up three top-three performances for the Eagles as well. Figueredo placed third at the SeaBest Invitational and the FAU Golf Invitational. The sophomore is averaging 71.6 per round heading into Amherst.
