Breakthrough T1D is looking for FGCU students who may be interested in assisting them with their Breakthrough T1D SWFL Community Walk at the Miromar Outlets on November 8th, 2025! Set up will start at 7:30 AM and they are also looking for volunteers to help with set up & tear down, pass out waters to walkers, and assist with sign up. Breakthrough T1D is a nonprofit that focuses on accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes and its complications. Any volunteer under 18 years old has to have an adult present with them.   If you're interested in this opportunity and would like to sign up, please contact Makayla Nalenzy at mnalenzy@breakthrought1d.org.   Students who complete this event gain skills in Teamwork/Collaboration, Leadership, and Professionalism/Work Ethic. Join FGCU’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety along with ECOFGCU - The Environmental Coalition of FGCU, the Florida Water Environment Association, Love Blue FGCU, the Florida Engineering Society and the Ornithology Club for a campus clean-up on 9am-11am Saturday November 8th. Note: you do not need to be a member of any of these groups to participate in this Service-Learning Volunteer event!    Participation is limited. RSVP here on EagleLink  You will be using the Litterati app to record data from the clean-up. Be sure to download the app and join the challenge prior to coming… and don’t forget to charge your phone! Safety is a priority when engaging in experiential service-learning opportunities.  Be sure to wear closed-toe shoes, bring a reusable filled water bottle, and use sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, etc.). Meet us at FGCU’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS MOD)   Why Cleaning Up and Preventing Litter Is So Important: Not only can litter be unsightly, but much of the litter is made of plastic that does not biodegrade – it only breaks down into smaller bits of plastic that eventually washes out to our waterways via stormwater. Preventing litter is especially important here on campus because FGCU is located on a regional, interconnected watershed system that spills into the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve and joins the Gulf waters. Preventing litter and pollution helps make sure that our waterways remain clean to protect the environment and wildlife. It also keeps our stormwater system from clogging, which helps prevent flooding.   How to use the Litterati app to record data during the clean-up: Step 1 Download the Litterati app to your phone or device before arriving to the event Step 2 Join the FGCU Respect the Nest Challenge by using code: BLUE Step 3 Take a photo of litter where it is found, tag it (with object, material, and brand) and properly dispose of any litter you find.  

Join Habitat for Humanity and SWE in a build event where you can earn service hours and meet new people while helping someone in need by building safe affordable housing. No experience is required and it is a great opportunity to learn both hands on and interpersonal skills. See you there!
