Abuse Counseling and Treatment (ACT) Community Service
On October 29th, 2021, the Dancing E’Gals volunteered at the Second Act Thrift store in Fort Myers, Florida. ACT stands for Abuse Counseling and Treatment which is a private, non-profit agency committed to serving victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking. The ACT agency has several thrift store locations that donate all proceeds of the sale items to fund ACT’s many services. These services include; a 24-hour hotline, residential program, children’s program, non-residential counseling program, advocacy program, on-call crisis program, rape crisis center, community education, professional training, and volunteer programs. Clients of ACT are also offered vouchers to shop for free at Second ACT thrift stores and are also offered job opportunities. The Dancing E’gals had a total of four of our dancers give their time by helping to organize the store and putting items out on the sales floor. The responsibilities included working in the back sorting through items that needed to be hung, placed in baskets, or thrown out depending on the quality of the item. The items included men’s and women’s clothing, household items, shoes, and other miscellaneous items. The Second Act Thrift store employees and other volunteers were extremely grateful for our help during our four-hour (10 am-2 pm) shift. By the end of our shift, we made a few purchases as well to give back to the store so it can keep running for those who need it most. As a team, we completed our volunteer service at Second Act Thrift Store with complete gratitude because we were given the chance to give back to our community.
Additionally, our entire Sports Club wore purple during the month of October to raise awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness (DVA) month. We also sold raffle tickets to raise money to donate to ACT and the victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
