Wellness Wisdom: Benefits of Taking Dance Workout Classes
FGCU’s Recreation and Wellness department offer students with various workout classes at the University Recreation Center. Some of the offerings include dance-based classes, like Zumba and Cardio Hip Hop.
A dance workout is any form of movement to music that gets your heart rate up. Whether this is in your living room, in a class, or at a party, dancing is a great way to improve your wellness. Many instructed dance workouts aid in increasing muscular strength, mobility, and flexibility. Some of the health benefits of a dance workout include:
- Increased focus
- A stronger heart
- Increased happiness
- Reduced stress and anxiety
When learning new dances people need to utilize the part of their brain that helps us focus, by participating in dance classes you are practicing a new level of focusing that can improve your intellectual wellness. Additionally, your social/emotional wellness could be improved through the joy dancing brings and the community a class provides. Dancing has proved to reduce stress and anxiety.
The physical benefits to dance classes are ample, but having a healthy heart and improving stiffness are key benefits to dancing. Sitting in class and at work all day can negatively impact your mobility and flexibility. Participating in dance classes can help combat some of those effects.
