Wellness Wisdom: Açaí Bowls
Açaí, pronounced ah-sigh-ee, comes from açaí palm trees which is native to South America. The palm trees produce a black-purple fruit that is edible. Açaí has become extremely popular in America and have become labelled as a superfood because of its antioxidant potential. Açaí bowls can be found on campus and off campus at Jamba Juice, Playa Bowls, The Bowl, Bahia Bowls, UHMAZEBOWLS, and so much more.
Although several studies have been conducted, little is known about the potential health benefits in humans aside from an increase in plasma antioxidant capacity. So lets dive into the benefits of antioxidants!
- Lower risk of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, as well as heart attacks
- Promotes brain health
- Enhances and improves memory
- Lower cholesterol
- Reduces blood sugar levels
Something to note is that experiments have been done using açaí pulp as an oral contrast for gastrointestinal MRIs. Very large doses of açaí might affect the results of MRI scans. So, if you are going to get an MRI, let your doctor know!
