Area Council Applications for the 2023-2024 year are open!

If you are a student that is interested in seeing a change in your community or neighborhood, Area Council is the best place to get started. You will have direct contact with like-minded residents that want to see a difference in the community.

Have you ever thought about hosting an event that is something you completely planned with a group or on your own? Want to host events that are specifically catered to your area?

Area Council is the perfect place to get started. Brought to you by the Resident Housing Association, Area Council is a way for you to earn service learning hours while also enhancing your leadership skills. There are a total of nine communities; Westlake, Osprey, Eagle, Biscayne, Palmetto, Everglades, Groves Neighborhood, Glades Neighborhood, and Gardens Neighborhood.

*We would like to throw in the disclaimer that, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE A RESIDENT ASSISTANT TO JOIN! In fact, if you were an RA, you would not be able to join, but you can request funding for different events/programs. Email us if you have any questions about that.*

Not only would you be able to advocate for yourself, you will be able to speak for your community. There are various positions within Area Council. We have open positions for President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and open delegation spots(up to 10).

Below we have information on each position:

(Depending on your council, some roles may be assigned to other members)

President - You handle the execution of the meeting. You will reach out once your council is made and designate a time for the meetings to take place. The Board of Directors utilize Microsoft Teams, so a channel will be created for each council. If you have another way to reach out, by all means, feel free to use that as well. You do not count as a voting member for bills or funding requests.

Vice President - You step in for the president in their absence. Keep meetings on track, schedule the events, and reach out to organizations regarding collaborating with the Area Council. You also will be in charge of representing your community at the Board of Governors meetings. Those meetings will be with the Board of Directors, essentially providing the board with updates about the community you are in as well as receiving information based on the requests sent to the Board of Directors. You do not count as a voting member for bills or funding requests.

Secretary - When the President/Vice President are absent, you will step in on their behalf. If the Vice President cannot attend the weekly Board of Governors meetings, you are next in line to attend those. During your council meetings, you will be assigned as the minutes transcriber. You do not count as a voting member for bills or funding requests.

Treasurer - You are in charge of keeping track of the budget. If there are questions about a bill or other information regarding money, you are reuqired to ask and get the correct information to share with everyone. You count as a voting member for bills/funding requests. If you say no, you should have a valuable reason as to why.

Delegation - You are the foundation of the organization. Without you all, no bills can be voted on. The delegation also helps with networking. You are only required to go to the general meeting and show up if possible to various events that will be hosted.

*For all of these positions, RHA has the tools for you to succeed. We have templates and our own personal experience with Area Council. Please do not let your lack of knowledge stop you from being in something great.*
