STEM Conference and Southwest Florida Reading Festival
Information about the upcoming STEM conference and the Southwest Florida Reading Festival is included as well as deadlines and the date of our first meeting!
Hello Eagles!
I hope everyone has had a great start to the semester! We have a few exciting events and opportunities available to students in the upcoming weeks!
First I’d like to pass on information about a local science and math conference. It is taking place in Naples on Saturday February 8thbeginning at 7:30am. The conference is designed for 5th grade girls, their parents, and teachers. We are looking for a few volunteers to help with the registration table in the morning. You will earn service learning hours for this event! Aside from checking in attendees, you will have the opportunity to stay and observe the conference until it ends at 12:30pm if desired. If you would like to see the flyer of the event or the registration information let me know and I will pass it on!
We also have been presented with the opportunity to volunteer at the Southwest Florida Reading Festival right here in Fort Myers. Even though this event doesn’t take place until Saturday March 15th, we can start filling up volunteer slots. There are two different jobs that involve working with children. The first is running the face painting table at the festival. There are approximately 8 slots to fill for this job, so if you’re interested let me know ASAP. I’ve been informed that this is the most popular table at the event. Volunteer positions run from 9:15am-4:30pm. There are all day shifts and half day shifts. The second position that involves working with children and adolescents includes managing the free book tables. Every child that attends the festival is given one free book of their choice. Our job would be to help them make this selection and to ensure each child only receives one. You would earn service learning hours for volunteering at this event.
If you are interested in volunteering at either the STEM Conference or the Southwest Florida Reading Festival, please send me an email so I can give you more information!
Also, our first meeting of the semester will be taking place on Tuesday January 21st at 8:00pm in Merwin Hall 110.
FYI If you are interested in attending the FEA Conference in Orlando, (I send out information about this earlier this month) the deadline is January 20th! If you would like information about this let me know and I’ll pass it on!
