From the Courtroom to the Classroom: The Benefits of Collegiate Mock Trial
As a college student, you may have explored the many extracurricular activities that FGCU has to offer, ranging from sports teams to clubs and organizations. Did you know we have a yarn club, a fishing club, Model United Nations, and a tabletop club? One activity that you may not have considered yet is collegiate mock trial.
Collegiate mock trial is a competitive program that simulates a real trial setting. Teams of college students act as attorneys and witnesses to present their cases to a panel of judges. Teams receive their case materials in the Fall, and the teams must argue their case based on the rules of evidence and legal procedure.
Participating in mock trial can be an incredibly enriching experience for a number of reasons. For one, it provides a unique opportunity to develop and hone important skills, such as critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork. In addition, it can offer a glimpse into the legal profession and help students determine whether a career in law is something they may be interested in pursuing.
This spring, the FGCU Legal Eagles competed for the first time! The FGCU Legal Eagles received the case materials in the Fall and practiced twice a week in preparation for the regional competition. This year, the case was a civil plane crash that resulted in the death of the pilot and passenger. Although we did not advance to the next round, our teammate, Ethan Marlow, took home an outstanding witness award! The mock trial season for 2022-2023 has come to an end for FGCU but we are looking for new members for 2023-2024! Next year, the case will be a criminal case.
To get involved in mock trial, you can join our team! FGCU also offers a Mock Trial course in the Fall and you don't have to be in the legal studies major for the course. You can contact us for more information.
Overall, collegiate mock trial is an exciting and educational experience that can offer numerous benefits to college students. Whether you are interested in law or simply looking for a new and challenging extracurricular activity, consider giving mock trial a try. Who knows - you may discover a new passion and make lasting connections along the way.
