Fort Myers, Bonita Beach Dog Park Cleanup !
Community service has always been a big part of FGCU and as a club under this University, it is our resposibility to provide service however we can. At FGCU Scuba, we believe that community service is needed in order to shape an individual into a responsible contributing member of socitey. Being a club gives us the ability to reach these students so we can act on said belief.
At the Bonita Beach Dog Park this past Sunday, we did just that. Members from both FGCU Sailing and Scuba Club came together safley over a common goal. We wanted to help Lee County make this beach as clean as possible for their citizens both four and two legged. Why, you ask ? Everyone deserves to have a healthy and safe environment to enjoy their weekend. This event went so well, we actually finished collecting trash ahead of schedule because we had such a great turn out and The Office of Service Learning sent students our way which really helped. By providing community service, you are helping everyone in said comminty and the locals clearly expressed their gratitude regarding the time and effort donated by everyone at this event. They made us feel very welcome and helped us look for trash. also, when your coomunity supports and is thankful for the service work you do, it seeds a baseline feeling of inspiration or motivation that makes you want to do more. We want students to experience this so they go above and beyond to make a difference.
Loking back at this event, we feel that we made an impact, but we could do so much more. That is why we will be looking to hopefully develop a long lasting relationship with Lee County Parks and Recreation to regularly schedule cleanups wherever they need it most. We would also like to get fimilair with other FGCU clubs, like we did with Sailing club, to better understand our own FGCU community.
