- Tue, Apr 7Sociology Club TablingSociology Club will be tabling right outside the Library on April 7th from 10:00 to 1:00, getting to know interested students and inviting them to our future events and socials! Please come on by and say hi! There will be small goodies and answers to any questions!
- Thu, Apr 9Breaking the Rules: The Sociology of DevianceThis event will be discussing the gray area between conforming and rebelling. Sociology equips us with tools that can explain and refine what makes something ‘right’ or ‘wrong’, or even where such concepts originate. Ever wonder why face tattoos are taboo, but plastic surgery is seemingly normal? Do the lines between behaviors that get you in trouble and the ones that get you praised sometimes seem arbitrary? This event will explore what violating the status quo means, and the ways in which it can serve as a driver for positive social change, or as a bad omen for a decaying society.
- Thu, Apr 16Don’t Jinx It: Studying SuperstitionWhy do we knock on wood, avoid black cats or believe in lucky numbers? Are superstitions harmless habits, or do they reveal something deeper about how we think and interact with the world? Come explore the meaning behind superstition with the Sociology, Anthropology, Psychology and Philosophy clubs through discussion, examples and real-world connections.
- Thu, Apr 30Sociology in Current EventsSociology in Current Events is an open roundtable discussion where students come together to examine what’s happening in the world through a sociological lens. Rather than a lecture-based format, this roundtable focuses on learning sociology through practice by applying sociological concepts and theories to real-world news, cultural trends and social issues. Participants are encouraged to engage in discussion, ask questions and explore how power, inequality, institutions and social behavior shape everyday life. No prior sociology knowledge is required. This is a welcoming space for respectful dialogue, curiosity and shared perspectives. Whether you want to speak, listen or learn, all majors are welcome to join the conversation and connect current events to the bigger social picture.
