Dempsey earns USA Baseball Collegiate Team invite
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The 2025 John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year will don the Stars and Stripes this summer, as Florida Gulf Coast University's Evan Dempsey has been invited to compete at the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp in late June.
Dempsey becomes the first FGCU baseball player in program history to receive an invitation to the training camp. He joins FGCU head coach Dave Tollett, who was named to USA Baseball's Collegiate National Team coaching staff on Monday.
"I didn't think I'd actually be on Team USA one day," Dempsey said. "I'm really excited because I get to wear USA across my chest and wear those colors."
A Tampa native, Dempsey went 5-1 on the mound this season with a 1.97 ERA. He appeared in 15 games, including 10 starts, logging 68 2/3 innings with 75 strikeouts and 20 walks. Of the 57 hits he allowed, only six went for extra bases. Opponents batted just .225 against him. In his final start of the season, on four days' rest, Dempsey pitched five innings to lead FGCU to a 6-5 win over Stetson University, clinching a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference championship.
As an outfielder, Dempsey played in all 60 of FGCU's games, starting 59. He batted .309 with 71 hits, including 18 doubles and three home runs, for a .435 slugging percentage. He scored 41 runs, drove in 30 and was a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen bases, tying for the team lead.
The USA Baseball Collegiate National Team Training Camp will feature 56 of the top non-draft-eligible college players in a five-game Stars vs. Stripes intrasquad series in North Carolina from June 29 to July 3. The final Collegiate National Team roster will be announced July 3.
Following training camp, the Stars team will represent Team USA at the 45th USA vs. Japan Collegiate All-Star Championship Series from July 8–13 at various venues across Japan. The Stripes team will guide select players on a Collegiate National Team Prospects squad in a Fourth of July matchup with the Appalachian League Select Team in Kannapolis, North Carolina. Tollett will serve as third base coach for the Stripes squad.
