All-American honors come in for Dempsey
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University's Evan Dempsey earned a trio of honors Tuesday from two collegiate baseball organizations. Perfect Game named him a First Team All-American and the Collegiate 2-Way Player of the Year, while the American Baseball Coaches Association selected him to the First Team All-Southeast Region as a starting pitcher.
The Tampa native was also named to the All-Atlantic Sun Conference First Team as a starting pitcher and Second Team as an outfielder. Dempsey appeared in all 60 of FGCU's games, starting 59. He posted a .309 batting average with 71 hits, including 18 doubles and three home runs, for a .435 slugging percentage. He scored 41 runs, drove in 30 RBIs and was a perfect 14-for-14 on stolen bases, tying for the team lead.
On the mound, Dempsey ranks second in the nation with a 1.97 ERA. He went 5-0 as a starter and became FGCU's Friday night starter in April. The Newsome High School graduate struck out 75 batters over 68 2/3 innings. He finished with a 5-1 record with his only loss coming in extra innings at Georgia.
Defensively, Dempsey committed just one error in 99 chances, recording 86 putouts and 12 assists—two of which came from the outfield—for a .990 fielding percentage.
He also earned ASUN All-Tournament Team honors after helping lead the Eagles to the conference championship. In the ASUN title game, Dempsey pitched on four days' rest for the first time this season, earning a 6-5 win over Stetson. During the tournament, the sophomore hit .385 with 10 hits, scored seven runs and went 1-0 on the mound.
By earning ABCA First Team All-Region honors, Dempsey moves on to the national ballot for ABCA All-American consideration. He is also a finalist for the John Olerud Award, awarded by the College Baseball Foundation to the nation's best two-way player.
